The new center of marine innovation: creating the digital brand for Quebec’s leading marine technology hub

A little bit of

BACKGROUND
STORY

In the latter part of 2021, we had the pleasure of hosting AmĆ©lie Desrochers, who currently serves as the executive director of Novarium. She informed us about an upcoming marine innovation hub set to be established in Rimouski by the end of the year, bearing the name Novarium. This remarkable facility would serve as the nucleus of Rimouski’s marine innovation ecosystem.

When entrusted with the task of developing the brand and website for Novarium, we were acutely aware of the need to capture the essence of the organization’s innovative spirit and progressive mindset. To kickstart the process, we conducted in-depth research and held extensive discussions with the key stakeholders of Novarium. By understanding their vision, goals, and target audience, we gained valuable insights that formed the foundation of our creative approach.Ā

BUILDING

Constructed in 2021, the Novarium Research Center serves as a dedicated hub for marine research and innovation.

It has become a home for many of Quebec’s most promising marine technology startups, providing them with a shared area to work and collaborate. The center’s emphasis on sharing research equipment and resources fosters an environment where these startups can flourish and collaborate more seamlessly, fueling their success.

STARTUPS

Our talented photographer and valued collaborator, Nancy Guignard, embarked on a captivating journey to capture stunning photographs of the startups at Novarium. Immersed in their natural environment, Nancy skillfully documented the startups engaged in marine research and actively working on the water. Her exceptional skills behind the lens beautifully showcased the startups in their element, providing a captivating visual narrative of their dedication to marine exploration and innovation.

BRANDING

TheĀ

LOGO

At the onset of the logo creation process, our primary objective was to create a symbol that effectively represented the essence of Novarium and its dedication to marine innovation. Given the context, we explored the idea of incorporating a diving bell, a powerful and recognizable icon associated with underwater exploration.

Through meticulous sketching and digital iterations, we captured the essence of the diving bell while infusing it with elements that conveyed innovation and forward thinking. This process resulted in a logo that visually represents Novarium’s commitment to pushing boundaries in the marine industry.

SYMBOL

The diving bell is one of the earliest types of equipment for underwater research and exploration.

Fun fact:
In 1535, Guglielmo de Lorena created and used what is considered to be the first modern diving bell.

3D ASSETS

We came up with the idea of using a 3D version of a whale within the brand, one of the flagship marine animals in the St-Lawrence river.Ā

Whaleseeker, one of the companies associated with Novarium, developped an AI based program to detect whale life from imagery, an example of which we can see here (the small green outline in the image is a beluga)

When we were approached to build the website for Novarium, we knew that we had to create something that would reflect the innovative spirit and forward-thinking nature of the organization.

Our team worked closely with the Novarium team to develop a website that was visually striking, easy to navigate, and provided visitors with all the information they needed about the organization. Our team also ensured that the website was optimized for search engines and mobile devices, to make it easy for users to find and navigate on any device.
